**Job Summary**
Provides advanced technical support to physicians, advanced practice providers, and clinical staff on clinical technologies. Provides expert planning for clinical technology expansion. The Lead Clinical Engineer is a key member of the perioperative services team, responsible for the oversight, integration, and optimization of advanced clinical technologies within the procedural environment. This role ensures the safe, effective, and efficient operation of complex systems including surgical navigation, robotic-assisted surgery platforms, integrated operating room systems, and patient monitoring technologies. The engineer serves as the primary technical expert and liaison between clinical staff, biomedical engineering, IT, and external service providers, ensuring that all perioperative technologies support optimal patient outcomes and clinical workflows.
This position requires a deep understanding of electromechanical systems, software interfaces, and networked medical devices. The Lead Clinical Engineer will lead efforts in technology planning, acquisition, and implementation, contributing to capital equipment decisions and long-term strategic planning. They will be responsible for troubleshooting and resolving technical issues in real-time, including during surgical procedures, and will conduct root cause analyses for adverse events involving clinical technologies. The role also includes supporting preventive maintenance schedules, performing minor repairs, and coordinating emergency service responses when necessary.
In addition to technical responsibilities, the Lead Clinical Engineer will develop and deliver training programs for clinical staff, ensuring safe and proficient use of surgical technologies. They will also play a critical role in policy development, compliance with regulatory standards, and continuous quality improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, and will thrive in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment where collaboration and adaptability are essential.
This role is embedded within the surgical services department and may require direct support during patient care activities. The Lead Clinical Engineer is expected to be a proactive innovator, continuously seeking opportunities to enhance the integration and performance of clinical technologies in support of surgical excellence.
**Qualifications**
Bachelor’s degree required or Master’s degree preferred in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, industrial engineering or a similar engineering or scientific background.
Two years’ experience working with medical equipment, and background in equipment testing and quality control/quality assurance preferred.
Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred. If PE license is not obtained, background experience or Master’s degree is highly preferred.
